Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage is believed to have been developed by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, physician to Buddha, more than 2,500 years ago in India. It made its way to Thailand where the techniques were perfected. It combines elements of yoga and shiatsu (acupressure), working with the energy pathways of the body and the therapy points thought to be located along the body’s 10 major energy channels known as “Sen” lines, making it more energizing and rigorous than more classic forms of massage.

Thai massage is less commonly known as the Thai yoga massage, because the therapist uses his or her hands, knees, legs, and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Many people say Thai massage is like doing yoga without any work. Muscle compression, joint mobilization, and shiatsu are also used during treatment, leaving you energized yet very relaxed . If you have never treated yourself to a Traditional Thai Massage  you’re in for a treat.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu , originated in Japan . The term Shiatsu might be first cited in a 1915 book, Tenpaku Tamai’s Shiatsu Ryoho. Shiatsu, also known as acupressure, is a finger pressure massage technique that is sometimes confused with acupuncture. Shiatsu massage therapy and acupuncture are founded on the Chinese Meridian System. The therapist applies pressure with her/his thumbs, finger, and palms to specific areas of the client’s body that have been determined during an assessment period prior to the massage session. There are no needles involved with Shiatsu. Massage techniques like tapping, squeezing, rubbing, and applied pressure are applied along the meridians to unblock energy blockages and reintroduce the optimal flow of Ki.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and creates relaxation.

The therapist generally uses massage oil to facilitate making long, smooth strokes over the body. Swedish massage is done with the person covered by a sheet, a technique called “draping”. One part of the body uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another part of the body. Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue and aromatherapy.
